I am already preparing for the onslaught of criticism that I’m certain my point of view will generate. No fact I offer about my background, motivation or experience will serve to support a reprieve. Still, it is time to point out some simple truths. In this critical time of immense difficulty and economic struggle facing those of us who live in “Middle-Town”, it’s no wonder we might gravitate towards “The One”, who claims to represent change. The ongoing disintegration of our quality of life drives our desire and perceived need for a change. Is Obama, who has anointed himself “The One”, the catalyst for this much needed change, reality, or merely a figment of our over active imaginations?
Unlike most political figures who have emerged in this presidential election, Obama’s newness to the political spectrum leaves no option for a historical fact check into his claims as the “change candidate.” As a one time supporter who has become more and more disillusioned, the only real change I’ve seen, is his position on issues that matter to me. Whether he shifts on FISA or offshore drilling, this change candidate has proven his ability to adjust stance with a facile ease that is positively Nixonian. This has less to do with “The One”, being bi-partisan and more likely indicates a tendency for being bi-polar.
Joking aside, shifting his stance on these issues is most likely a reflection of “The One’s” perception of the polls and his fear of John McCain’s ability to resonate with the common man’s pocket book. Even though it has been stated that offshore drilling would NOT effect the price of oil, John McCain has struck a cord. In their rush to the middle, both are relinquishing the distinctions between them. And we are served up Obamacain.
Fifty years ago there was a politician with the courage to take on corrupt governmental programs. He had the courage to fire Allen Dulles, head of the CIA and navigate this nation through the Cuban Missile Crisis. Many today try to draw a comparison between John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. But before you buy into the image that Obama is “The One”, to restore Camelot, please step back and reflect on the words of Cass Sunstein, surrogate and legal adviser to Barack Obama. Last week Sunstein said, only the most egregious crimes in this Bush administration should and would be prosecuted. As the Nation pointed out, Sunstein argued, “Prosecuting government officials risks a “cycle” of criminalizing public service.” Now ask yourself, is this a position John F. Kennedy would have taken? Sadly the era of Camelot ended in Dallas, Barack Obama has proven an unworthy successor.
I have contemplated for some time wondering if our political leaders are merely puppets of the powerful elite. This concept is only reinforced by Obama’s sudden appearance in this presidential arena. His wife’s membership in the CFR, his ties to powerful figures and his premature and fawning endorsement by the corporate media all cause one to wonder if he is truly “The One”. Or is he merely this season’s “token black man” in yet “Another Scary Movie”? But this movie is very real and has dire consequences. It begs the question, as one might say, did the elite stack the deck? Most people at this point know the connections between the Clintons and the elite. Have we missed those elite connections with this man, Barack? Could this explain the media black out on the honest, trust worthy politician’s like; Mike Gravel, Denise Kucinich and Ron Paul during this nomination process? Any suspicion I harbored about the control and influence on information by the corporate media has been magnified in this election cycle.
Barack Obama has proven to some of his one time supporters he is “The One,” the candidate of change.
Since Spring the Democratic nominee has changed so much he is no longer the man he appeared to be when I supported him just a few short months ago. Rather he has proven to me he is ”The One” I will not vote for in the fall.
